Bringing Back the Balance

The world system is top heavy and big headed, disengaged from the heart. The ingrained patriarchal ideology of Father/God/Male as head of state/ household etc. denying  the other half- Mother/Goddess/Female -Heart of house/family  has caused the out of balance dire state of global affairs.

Heart of Yoga is a unifying practice bringing balance of feminine/masculine into the body by acknowledging this basic vital co-existence within you through the inhale and exhale of the breath. One cannot get more fundamental than the basic need to breathe! Try doing one without the other..  But to stay in balance during the other 90% of the day and remain in constant balance?  I for one still swing like a pendulum, slower now though with the middle road steadying me more and more.

Heart of Yoga, along with other heart space experiences like being in nature, feeling her… becoming her. Feeling her rise within and paying attention to what pulls on your heart strings. She is an amazing nurturing teacher if you allow her the space that she has been deprived of for a long long time.

She is always there, having never left you. She is the heart, the heart that allows and supports all to rise towards the sun.

It’s easy being a hermit

I go through bouts of uncertainty..

And fear is the root

Fear of the unknown territory ahead

Fear of rejection

Fear of success

I now choose to come out of my shell

To peel back the layers

To face my fears

And do it anyway

Whatever comes, comes..

Whatever goes, goes..

What remains, stays

Neutral Wisdom

A wet windy walk gifted three treasures to me.

What messages do these three things bring,

What wisdom lies within layers of skin?

The shell is about listening to the call of the creative.. as it spirals out the shell becomes more vulnerable.. but more beautiful and expansive. We can choose to stay ‘safe’ in our cocoon or we can open up to and truly experience and become the creative

This heart is in fact a seed..back to the heart where your deepest desires reside waiting. The seed knows exactly what it going to be, it does not need to be taught or certified..  it does not need declarations. What it does need is to be watered and nurtured and coaxed out of its protective covering and given the space in order to grow. Like the expanding shell, being out of our comfit zones is where the growth happens.

The horn is about cultivation.. the cow’s horn points backward.. back to the self.. cultivating the inner self to strengthen the foundation.. like the bones that keep your body upright. Inner is strength enables outer strength to withstand the trials of society while protecting the preciousness within..And also transformation, shedding.. shedding of the old to transform into the new

There is wisdom everywhere ❤ All we need is to be open to receive

Coming out of the closet

The other day I was sitting in a waiting area with  another person also waiting to be seen. We began chatting and and after a while she asked “Are you a teacher?..you look like a teacher.” And I thought, wow really.. have I already embodied the teaching vibe  so much that it now just emanates from me? I was glowing inside with excitement as I said “Yes I am a teacher” She then asked me what it was that I taught, and from my happy heart I said “ I am a yoga teacher and a healer”.  Immediately the atmosphere changed and her interest turned to suspicion. She then lent away from me, closed herself off and began began humming a hymn.

Welcome to my life in Fiji as a healer on a spiritual path looking to share my gifts.

Yabia – Ancient voyaging food

Research for the Vunabaka story and the creation of new masi motifs took me to Solevu village on Malolo island. While I had requested to meet with the women, I ended up in a circle of elders, and a wonderful story-teller Orisi. whom I found to have paternal links to- (but that is another story entirely)

Here, I discovered an ancient food used during times of traditional voyaging. The yabia is a tuber not unlike potatoes, was once plentiful, growing wild along the shores of Vunabaka. It served as a binding agent and a natural preservative, and when prepared correctly could give longevity to root crops for up to a year! No wonder it was the perfect food during our voyaging times of discovering new islands.

Yabia is now extinct from Solevu village, so I set out to find the plant on the mainland. My only leads were that it grew near the ocean and resembled celery, with an upright green stalk and leaves that grew only on the top of the stalk. A request on the Fiji Seed Sharing Facebook page found me a photograph of a cultivated crop and a Teitei farms also shared a plant growing wild in their garden.

Now equipped with some images, a new masi motif was created to become part of a Tapa wall hanging to represent Solevu Village and her stories.

Dabi- Puzzlenut – Local plant medicine

A number of years ago I came across three trees growing on a coastline. All three had been hacked left right and centre, with between them had only a few straggly branches. This undoubtedly done for use of its amazing medicinal properties as there were many other trees about but all touched only by the elements.

The Dabi plant or puzzle nut/ cannonball mangrove is highly medicinal. It is antioxidant, antimicrobial and astringent, with the bark and leaves are both used.

Now some six years later they are clothed in all their glory and we have an abundance of  enigmatic beautiful puzzle nuts and a  new shoot to boot!

The nut once opened is impossible to put back together without it’s skin.. It wants to move, spread and grow! For each segment is a seed.

Deep gratitude to these three trees who now gift us seeds to sow and spread their healing as they themselves heal.

“If ever there was a time to let go, do yoga and breathe                                                                                     This most certainly is it
For I can fly like an eagle on high
Or throw up my hands and quit.” -Kaypacha-

The Passion Question

On my way home from Suva the other night, my son asked me a question. He said “Mum, what does passion mean?” There was no time for contemplation, the answer was there even before I knew it, and out it flew into the whipping wind and rain streaked night, but not before seeping through my skin into my blood to quicken my heartbeat once again.

“Passion is a feeling, a deep strong feeling you have about something that is important to you.” For the first time no other question came, no how or why. The answer satisfied, so much so that it carried him to sleep and all the way home. The passion question and answer also touched my beloved as he drove us, as he too fell silent. And when he spoke it was of deep things that matter.
